Biswas, Sraboni
Huge generation of very slowly degradable rubber waste is hazardous for human health and
environment. The major chemical component of rubber is Cis-1, 4 Polyisoprene. During
vulcanization polyisoprene chains are cross-linked with Sulphur at high heat. This study has been
conducted to isolate microorganisms which can degrade Natural and vulcanized Natural Rubber
from three different waste disposal areas of Chittagong: dumping sites near to Asian University
for Women (AUW) campus, the landfill of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) in Anandabazar
and the ship breaking yard in Sitakunda. Two strains (Strain 1.1 and stain 2.1) among thirteen
isolated pure strains showed slight degradation of natural rubber which were determined by hollow
formation of clear zone in applied rubber. Morphological identification demonstrated 1.1 and 2.1
are gram positive cocci and gram negative rods respectively. Further study will be conducted for
morphological and molecular identification.

Economic Valuation of Tourism in Rangamati: A Travel Cost Method
Mehzabeen, Maisha
In this paper, an economic valuation of Rangamati is done using the zonal travel cost
method. Data collected for the study has been done through on-site sampling in Rangamati and
the socio-economic background of the visitors has also been included as an important part of the
survey. The travel cost has been estimated by doing the summation of all the relevant costs
incurred during the trip as well as the opportunity cost of the time spent for visitation in
Rangamati. The visitation rate has been calculated as a ratio of the actual number of visitors
and the potential number of visitors on a yearly basis. The regression is conducted and then the
consumer surplus or their maximum willingness to pay for visiting the site has been calculated.
This maximum willingness to pay for the site is also the value addition to the domestic economy.
Future research in this field could get guidance and implications from the results yielded by this
study and help policy makers formulate more effective policies in maximizing the utility and thus
increasing the economic benefits which could be obtained likewise.

Perception of Democracy among Youth in Myanmar and Burmese Migrant Communities
Win, Naw Chit Su
Myanmar has recently undergone a transition to democratic government. The practice of
democracy among youth in Myanmar is new, but critical for the success of democracy in future.
The perception of democracy varies among Burmese youth in Myanmar and Burmese migrant
communities in Thailand. This thesis undertook comparative analysis of the perception of
democracy among youth in Yangon, Myanmar and Mae-Sot, migrant area in Thailand. While the
youth in Myanmar have recently participated in their first democratic experience, the youth in
Thai-Burmese border or migrant area have had longer exposure to democratic experiences in
Thailand. Comparing the two groups’ perception of democracy will be helpful for policy makers
to better understand Myanmar democracy’s future direction. This research aims to answer the
following questions: how does migration affect Burmese youth’s perception of democracy? Why
and how is the perception of Burmese youth in Myanmar different from Burmese youth in the
Thai-Burmese border? The data for this paper was gathered through one hundred and twenty
high school students from a migrant school and other one hundred and twenty high school
students from school in Yangon, Myanmar. Based on quantitative and qualitative research, the
main findings support my hypothesis. The results prove that people who have migrated home in
Thai-Burmese border have improved democratic view compared to people who stayed in
Myanmar.
