<title>Contemporary Perspectives on Migration in the Context of Bangladesh through the Media Lens</title>

<description>Contemporary Perspectives on Migration in the Context of Bangladesh through the Media Lens
Samin, Farah
This paper discusses the condition of migrant workers in Bangladesh along with the influence of media in their life. Besides, it depicts the reason, purpose, advantages and disadvantages of migration from Bangladesh to other parts of the world. Throughout the paper, several documents, news articles and a documentary Deshantori are analyzed in order to understand different perspectives of the migrants (laborers, students, doctors, teachers and some other profession people) of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a highly populated country with a huge migration rate and this rate is increasing every year. These migrants have an important contribution in the national economy of Bangladesh. Behind this migration, media such as television, radio, internet, and also the mobile phone system play an inevitable role. Hence, considering migration as a significant perspective, in this paper I have depicted the notion of migration and the impact of media on it.

<description>Contemporary Perspectives on Migration in the Context of Bangladesh through the Media Lens
Somasundaram, Bradheepa
Cinema is a popular media for entertainment, and also plays a key role in shaping people’s ideas, behaviors, and gender roles through reinforcing popular cultural values and practices. Three movies, Paddayappa, Podaa Podi, and 22 female kottayam, are selected to discuss the gender identities and their representations in movies. The two movies Padayappa and Podaa Podi clearly portray gender identities, roles and how a Tamil men and women should act in the society. However, 22 female kottaymam breaks the traditional notion of gender behaviors of norms regarding being a woman. Most of the Tamil movies are male centric, and portray men’s dreams, their aspirations, their tragedies, their revenge, and their life, while women are often portrayed as secondary subjects to men, as their lovers, wives, and mothers. Additionally, women seem to be prioritized in movies, but they often get the marginalized position. In each of these films, the men, heroes, are clearly the saviors, and they are focused on throughout the theme plot. In most of the movies, heroes are portrayed as masculine, strong, aggressive, fighting with villains, taking responsibility to protect his wife and family and have the power to change the society. Tamil cinema portrays the division of “good” and “bad” women as in clear cut as black and white divides. The division between “good” and “bad” women is clearly depicted through their physical features, language, dress, and body structures. Additionally, chaste, intelligent, motherly, and divine are some of the potential characters that a “good woman” embodies, while the “bad woman” contains some characters such as a temptress, greedy, cruel, and unkind. Though the majority of the films focus on hero centric theme, there are some female centric movies too. However, female centric movies also present some feminine characteristics such as kind, obedient, and divine. These movies have not been as successful as hero centric movies.

<title>NEPAL CIVIL SOCIETY AND ITS DEVELOPMENT</title>
<link>https://repository.auw.edu.bd/handle/123456789/59</link>
<description>NEPAL CIVIL SOCIETY AND ITS DEVELOPMENT
Joshi, Astha
The civil society is considered to be one of the most important components that help in ensuring good governance in a state. It is defined to be an autonomous body that is separate from the market, political parties and the state. There is a clear distinction given between the civil society and political institutions, however in the case of Nepal this distinction is not applicable due to the high level of association between the political institution and civil society. This has shown to put stress on the development of the civil society as an entity that can hold the government accountable. Furthermore, as seen in the case of most countries in the South, colonialism had an important influence in the direction and content of civil society in colonial societies. However, Nepal is one of the few non-western countries to have been outside of the normal colonial experience and this had an important influence on shaping civil society in Nepal in a unique way. Additionally, the civil society in Nepal and its development has also been affected due to the political institutions that tried to co-opt the process of mobilization of civil society for its own benefits.

<title>GLACIAL LAKE OUTBURST FLOOD FREQUENCY ANALYSIS IN THE SAPTA KOSHI RIVER BASIN OF NEPAL</title>
<link>https://repository.auw.edu.bd/handle/123456789/58</link>
<description>GLACIAL LAKE OUTBURST FLOOD FREQUENCY ANALYSIS IN THE SAPTA KOSHI RIVER BASIN OF NEPAL
Chaudhary, Archana
In recent years, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) has become a huge challenge for any infrastructural development in the Sapta Koshi basin, the most flood prone river of Nepal. This study presents the empirical and statistical analysis of GLOF discharges to estimate the event magnitude and frequency of its occurrence. The empirical approach requires comparison of discharge calculated using the four established methods for GLOF peak estimation with the measured peak at gauging stations. The statistical analysis involves estimation of design flood using Gumbel (EV1) distribution and the standard error associated with it. For the GLOF frequency analysis, instantaneous maximum and daily maximum discharges of the day of the event were obtained from literature and from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) of Nepal. The result based on empirical analysis shows that among the all four methods compared, the calculated discharge values using the Walder and Costa method are closest to the measured GLOF values. The probability plot shows that datasets follow the EV1 distribution quite well. Further, the flood frequency analysis shows that designed values obtained using the EV1 model and published design flood peaks of the Koshi basin lies within 95% confidence Interval. However, higher calculated design flood values in comparison to published values highlights the need of GLOF and Seasonal High Floods (SHF) to be analyzed individually. For more accurate estimation establishment of more gauging stations and regular study on GLOF is strongly recommended.
